Meeting 10: Kudzu Vine Birdhouses
“In order to see birds it is necessary to become part of the silence”
— Robert Lynd
We have big plans to take create pods, training the woody vines, essentially creating large living baskets to sit in made from kudzu! Often builders recommend building a birdhouse before you embark on building your own home, and using this same premise we made bird houses together from the woody vines that in many ways serve as prototypes for our kudzu pod dreams.
We used split recently harvested woody vines and bits of kudzu core, which are leftover from bast fiber processing, to connect the larger vines together. We brought over warm water to soak some of the vine to make it more pliable.
On March 5 we will have a community workshop where we use this same technique to make bird houses together while discussing regenerative kudzu management and vine ways to create with invasive vines. This technique could be applied to many other sculptural forms on a small and large scale.
See you in the weeds,
x Nica
